Class Thursday

In the last class that we had, it was really relaxing. Our teacher brought us donuts, which I ate about five of, and some apple juice. I really enjoyed are last class, almost everybody was there and it was very chill. I don't think I could have asked with a better teacher or class. Everybody was friends with everybody and it was a class that I would enjoy coming too. It would have been a perfect class if DeShaun would have been there! I really wish every one the best of luck in there future, and I hope every one the best in their futures.

Class on Tuesday

This class we got more information about the final project for this class. We are doing are topic on pearl harbor, and my paper is going to be about the lead up to it. When we went to the library I picked out two of my books that I will use for the paper. Our group decided to split pearl harbor into the lead up to it, the Japanese side, American side, and after the war. I thought that that was the best way to divide it up. I already have all of my sources, but I still need to make sure that they are quality sources, rather then weaker ones.

Class this week

In class this week we learned what the requirements of project 3, and what has to be in it. I had a 3 page paper to write about the fantasy paper. My paper was about a weird type of talking fish that has to make a big decision. If anyone wants to more about it then you'll just have to read it :).The how to paper is mainly on the five stories that I read in the book from Oxford.  Some of the stories were almost 30 papers long, so I looked for the stories with the least amount of pages to save time. Overall I thought that the journals took the longest between the three different activities. This was because you would have to read the story then write the entry. There wasn't any flow when it came with writing the entry. You always had to stop and go again.

Thanksgiving Break

It was extremely nice seeing my family during Thanksgiving break. I haven't been home since I've come up to school with the busy soccer schedule I have. So going home and seeing all of my family was really nice, I just wish that the break was longer then it was. I really missed my mom's cooking and my own bed. The food in the dorms is disgusting and I don't know how much longer I can eat it. Also, my bed is getting to small for me. I don't know how a bed could be small for me because how short I am! Don't get me wrong I love college, but there is also a lot of different perks for going home. It's kind of nice being back at college with all the independence we get, but on the other hand I can't wait for winter break to be able to see all of my friends again! Overall the break was very good and the food was even better.

Class last period

In last class we talked about what we have to write about in the upcoming project. I'm going to write about how to write fantasy stories. I decided to write about fantasy because I believe that with my imagination it will be easier to write it. I can write about almost anything and it can constitute as a fantasy type of story. It's different then a fairy tale because in fantasy the protagonist doesn't always have to win, and the villain can win at the end. It all just depends how the author wants the story to end. It doesn't have to be all childish either. Fantasy stories can have a dark and ominous side to the story. Hopefully the story goes well, but I don't know how it won't because it's my own imagination that I will be using. 

Some ideas for fantasy paper

I have many ideas that are buzzing around my head for this project, but I'm not sure which one would be easier to write about. I don't want to give the ideas away for other people to use, but over the last couple days its been in my mind. The only thing that is bothering me a little, is that we haven't even finished are last essay, but we have started another project already. It will be a little hard to finish both, but hopefully it will all work out especially with soccer being over. That means I can have more time for soccer, and really focus on my studies more now. My grades have been pretty good so far, I just want to make sure that they don't fall for anything stupid at the end of the semester.

Last class period

In the last class period we discussed some problems people were having with our essays. I really enjoy these discussions in class because it makes it easier to fix the problems. If we know how the professor wants the essays to look, then it makes it so much more comfortable when we're writing it. The only reason for this is because it becomes less stressful when this happens. We also discussed about the next big project that we have, and my topic I chose was fantasy. I feel like this will be a fun project to write because you can make it how you want it. There isn't that many requirements in order for it.

Season Comes to and End

This weekend was the end of our season. We needed to be in the top four in order to make it into the mac tournament and it didn't happen. We had to get at least one point against Akron, the number 2 team in the country, but sadly we lost  1 to 0 with a goal in the 84th minute. It was a devastating loss for everyone, we had defended so well for so long, but just couldn't hold on. This meant it was an end to our four seniors and captains college careers. All I kept thinking about was how upset I would be in there shoes right now. I have no idea what I would do without soccer. It's the only thing that keeps me entertained and busy. My life would be so boring without soccer. We have a month break off soccer and I think it's the worse month.

Last class period

Last class we read each others essays and peer reviewed them for each other. I really don't enjoy doing the reading aloud because sometimes the reader corrects the mistakes for the writer just so it sounds like it flows. Therefore, you can't really determine if the mistake is the reader or the writer, and it gets awkward asking them. I think that if we all switched papers and read it silent to ourselves, that it would work just as good as reading it aloud. Also, when reading aloud you hear the other students reading the other essays aloud. It gets a little hard to concentrate on just one essay rather than hearing the one your suppose to be hearing. Other than that I really like peer reviews because it shows you what you can improve on in the next essay.

Meetings

We are not going to have class English class this Tuesday because we are doing meetings with our teacher. My meeting went pretty well I thought. We discussed the pros and cons of the outline and bibliography that I completed. I thought that it was extremely helpful that she did this because it gave us a little more notion on what she is expecting of us. I don't really know what to think about my midterm grade because it could easily slip under the mark quickly if I don't keep my work in check. I'm hoping to do really well in this class, and this meeting today really help keep me on track. It really makes me feel like I will do well on this paper after the meeting was over with today.

Learning how to cite websites

In our last class period we reviewed how to cite websites into your bibliography. There are slight differences from the way I learned how to cite them, but mainly still the same thing. Also, for homework we have to cite eight websites that we will use for project two. I'm still looking for three more sites to use, but they aren't getting that difficult to find anymore. I just wish that the way to cite them could be done by just using another website to plug the information in. That way, it would make it that much easier to get a bibliography, and it would be cited correctly almost every time! Overall though, I am looking forward to finding research about my thesis. Mostly to find out if in the movie Goal, how Mexican culture is degrading for Santiago to become a professional soccer player in England.

Reflection of class about Thesis

Last week in class we learned about how to analyze songs and put them into writing. It's a lot easier once you get the hang of it! All you really have to do is make sure that you can support whatever your trying to convey what the sentence means. It could really mean anything to anyone as long as they can back it up with evidence. We also learned how to write a thesis, and not just a regular thesis that any normal person can write. It was a extremely in depth thesis about certain details in a movie, book, or song. I chose the movie Goal because it has a lot of good lessons learned in it, and I enjoy the movie a lot. My thesis is going to be about how his Mexican culture didn't help in him becoming a professional footballer. It only harmed him, and yet he still made it there.

Sleep Deprevation

This play was very confusing and I didn't understand if it was a dream or not. Every time the little gremlins came onto the stage and made noises I thought that it was a dream. I wasn't sure though because sometimes the real people would be interacting with the gremlins growling. At the very end of the play I wasn't sure if he went to jail or not? The whole play was very well done, but it was a little hard to follow. I thought the girl actor playing the mother was phenomenal. She played the part very well and always a little anxious. Overall the play was really well done I just thought they should have been more clear.

College Schooling

So far in college I have learned valuable lessons already that will help me throughout the course of the next four years. One important one is to make sure you go to class. Doesn't matter if its a morning class, or an extremely late night class the worse thing you could do is not attend. Professors know who shows up to class and if you start struggling in it then they won't be so open to help. If you attend on the other hand, they know that your trying at least so they will be more helpful. Another important lesson is to do your homework as soon as you get back from class. If you do this then you have a lot of free time on the weekends and later in the day without having to worry about homework that's due. Also, this makes it almost impossible to forget about doing it because you're doing it directly after your class. This is helpful because it's fresh in your mind from learning it in class so you don't have to worry about forgetting any tiny hints. These two ideas about college will make life so much easier over the next four years. And of course the most important is time management...which I still have to work on a great deal. Hopefully it will come to me some day!

Game at Cincinnati

We had a game at Cincinnati this week and we won in overtime. It was a crazy game and the fans went crazy when we won. TRUTH. We were away so when we celebrated the win after, nobody in the fan section was saying a single word. After that we went on the bus and we "rode dirty." This means that since we just won that nobody would take a shower and we would drive home all smelly and "dirty." This win made our team believe that we could still make the NCAA tournament with an at large bid from the NCAA. This means that we won a certain number of games against top college teams. Which gives the NCAA a reason to put us into the tournament. After the win against Cincinnati, a Big East school, it's making it a lot better chance of making it to the tournament.

Game against Florida Atlantic

This was our first game after we lost our first in conference game against Bowling Green. The lose really suffered hard through the team and everyone couldn't wait till this game at home. The Friday before this game we lost 2 to 1 to Bowling Green, but we definitely did deserve to win at all. We had 20 shots on goals to there 2...We were just not very clinical in front of the goal. So after the hard lose away we came back flying against Florida Atlantic who flew from Florida a few days earlier. We started off the game really well and it started to die down before the half until we scored off a set piece with about 10 minutes left in the first half. After that the team was just on a roll. Not even 5 minutes after that we had a cross from the right side of the goal and finished it with a first time finish. Therefore, we were 2 to 0 up at half time with everything going great. When we started the second half everything else was the same. We were still dominating the game and we scored twice more before the game was over. I felt bad that Florida flew down here for a loss, but it was good to be back on winning terms!

Carrie

Last class that we had we watched Carrie. I have seen this movie many times before but only on TV. This means all the really raunchy racy scenes weren't shown. I thought that many of the scenes in the movie didn't have to be put in there. Like the whole scene with all the girls after gym class in the shower. I don't get the point of that scene at all, was it a build up to her having her period in the shower? I don't know. That whole beginning scene kind of confused me, and it wasn't shown in the television showings of it. It kind of put me off on the wrong foot of liking the movie, with a lot of unnecessary nudity. I thought the rest of the movie was really well put together. With how religious her mother was, and how all she really wanted was just to be normal and accepted. The ending scene was the only thing I would consider horror, the whole movie was just a build up of her powers and anger. Nothing really horrid happened before she killed everyone at the dance. Overall I thought the movie was good, just some awkward focus parts at the very beginning made it not spectacular. Still a very good movie that kept the audience on edge till the end.

Workouts for Soccer

Over the season the players that don't play the majority of the games usually have to do there own fitness. When this first started I was really confused and it made me a little angry. I felt like it was unfair to only have a certain number of players doing the workout. That if we are a "team" we should all get treated fairly and all have to do it. I now know that this isn't fair at all. Some players play the whole game almost every game and it would be unfair of us to expect them to do well on the fitness, especially if they are sore. Players that don't play as many minutes usually need the extra work because we come in and only play around twenty minutes. Even if we are tired after those minutes, it's nothing compared to the ninety minutes that some players play. Even if i dislike doing the workouts, I do know that in the long run it will make me a better and more conditioned player. We are still considered a team, even if some players have to do more work in order to catch up to the ones that do more during the game. Doing a couple fitness sessions here and there won't do much harm at all. It can only benefit us in the long run.

Class on Sept. 27

In class today we had to read this article about Frey and how he lied about certain facts in his memoir. We discussed about what each of us would consider a lie in a memoir. Everyone had different opinions on what they perceived as a lie. After that we all talked about the first part of ILHL, which was a group discussion. Our class was having a little dispute about whether or not it was okay for the doctors to experiment on Henrietta's cells. Also, if it was okay for them to do it on all patients that have free health care. The discussion didn't get out of hand, but it was fun seeing the room compete and argue with each other to prove their own opinions and beliefs. Lastly, we had to figure out something to write about for our literacy narratives that our due next Thursday. I decided my topic would be on a book I read my freshmen year of high school. I won't tell anyone....it's a surprise haha. We have to get our rough draft done by next Tuesday so I am sure by then that I will have an elaborate plan on how to write the narrative. One things for sure though, it's still hard trying to manage time with soccer and class. We've been missing a lot of time lately for late games.

Time Management

I never realized how hard it would be to manage my time at college. Everyone always said how hard it was and I figured it was just a thing all college kids say. Now I know that it is true. Playing soccer and having fifteen credits is making it hard to find time for homework and studying. When I get back from soccer all I ever want to do is take a nap and regain some energy, but I can't because of homework and having to go to study tables. It doesn't help that I've had to miss almost three classes in every class. We have been traveling every where lately and it's taking a toll on everyone's bodies and minds. I need to find a better way to manage my time and not forget about homework due dates, or what time practice is and where it's at. Hopefully as the year goes on I figure out what is the best strategy for me. If it's a planner or a calendar, to make sure that I know when and where, or even alarms on my phone letting me know when things are due. It's the beginning of my freshmen year of college so I am not that concerned that I am having trouble with it now. I know that I will find a way that works with me best because it always has in the past, and I hate missing assignments. Especially because I just forgot about them because I have too much on my mind.

Class on Sept. 20

Class on September 20th went by very fast because we were busy the whole time. When it started we had to right three memorable quotes from a television show or movie. I chose How I Met Your Mother because I have seen all the seasons probably three times through. It was fun trying to guess what other peoples quotes were from. Some nobody knew what it was, others everyone in class knew which where it was from. After we were done with that, we went over the readings from the book. We split into groups and each had a section of readings that we had to answer questions about. I had excerpt three which was about how she couldn't have certain friends if her mom didn't approve of them. But she did have a lot of friends at school from different "groups" in her school.

Class on Sept.11

Class today was a little more work for Cam and I then the other students. Since we missed class last Thursday for a game in Buffalo, we had to catch up on late work and make our blogs today. I chose a blog about soccer of course because now at college its one of the only things I do. Other than the occasional time to eat....haha. The blog I decided to research was about my favorite soccer team Manchester United. It was a fan club blog with news about transfers and injuries. In the end it was that bad and we both finished everything about ten minutes before last got out anyway.

About Me

My name is Sean Hazen and I have one brother named Andrew that attends Western with me as well. Also, I play on Western's Mens soccer team this fall and spring. I'm not really sure what I want to study at Western yet, but all I know is it will either be engineering or something science related. I hope to do well this year in my studies and throughout my four years here.
